There’s a lot of facial skincare products in the market nowadays — ranging from cleansers up to emulsions/moisturizers, it’s hard to choose which ones are the right items to buy. Some may choose the more popular brands, or the expensive ones, and some may opt to try the cheaper alternative.
To help you lessen the confusion, you must first understand the types of skincare products, how they work and why they are necessary. It also helps to know the type of skin you have. Is it oily? Dry? Normal? Combination of oily and dry? Sensitive? Consider this, too, when choosing the right product.
STEP 1: Cleanser
Removes dirt, oil and makeup. You need this because water is not enough to clean your face. To be used twice a day — day and night.
STEP 2: Exfoliant
Removes dead skin cells build up. Some exfoliant only cleans the skin’s surface, while others also cleans the pores. This product is needed to eliminate clogged pores which cause pimples. To be used 2-3 times a week.
STEP 3: Toner
Makes your face soft and smooth, and removes the remaining dirt or makeup. To be used twice a day — day and night.
STEP 4: Moisturizer
Hydrates the skin and reinforces the natural skin barrier. To be used twice a day — day and night. You may use different moisturizers for your morning and evening routine depending on your needs and preferences. The best moisturizer to use in the morning is the one with SPF to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays.
- Anti-aging serum/moisturizer
It’s filled with anti-oxidants and other anti-aging ingredients which helps prevent wrinkles and achieve that youthful glow. To be used once or twice a day. It’s great to start using this in your late 20’s or early 30’s before wrinkles become visible.
- Acne treatment
Helps reduce redness and kills acne-causing bacteria. Use if you have pimples or acne.
- Face Sheet Mask / Overnight Mask
This hydrates the skin, removes excess oil and helps improve the pores. Using facial masks also relaxes the skin and helps absorb all the other facial skin care products you applied.
- Face Mask
This hydrates the skin, removes excess oil and helps improve the pores. To be used after cleansing the face.
- Makeup Remover
Removes makeup prior to cleansing. It’s a must product for makeup users.
- Targeted treatments
Other optional products depending on your concerns, such as whitening.
Now that you know the purpose of each essential and optional skincare products, it’s time to choose what specific item and brand you should add to your routine. It’s a trial and error thing before you know what’s right for you. I suggest buying the items in small bottles first and try it out for a few days or weeks. Or maybe you can get sample boxes from sites like Sample Room (Philippines), Sample Store (Singapore) or The Black Box (Singapore).
Just stick with the basics and you won’t be overwhelmed with all the products you see :) Let me list it down again:
If you wish to add more products in your routine, that won’t be a problem as long as you have the basic skincare :)
My Skincare Routine
I have an oily/dry type of skin and it wasn’t easy at first to find the right product. Thankfully, my skin doesn’t break out every time I try something new. So now, I’m going to share my skincare routine and hope it can be of any help to you. I have jumped from product to product and here are my favorites:
STEP 1: CLEANSERS
STEP 2: EXFOLIANT
STEP 3: TONERS
STEP 4: ANTI-AGING SERUM
STEP 5: MOISTURIZER
STEP 6: ANTI-ACNE TREATMENT
STEP 7: FACE OVERNIGHT MASK
Notice that most products I use are from the same brand — Human Nature. Aside from having affordable prices, these products work amazingly well :)
So there you have it! If you’re still confused what to buy, you can buy the same skincare products I use/used.
